Path of Human Rights

The basis of human rights is formed by things which we define as rational or moral, things which we take for granted and which have long been an essential element of today’s society. The Path of Human Rights begins and ends at the English Garden near Interlaken Ost railway station. The circular route leads through Interlaken and Unterseen, whereby many of the 23 information panels are on cantonal or private land. A large section of the route follows the ‘Jakobsweg’, the Pilgrim Path of St James.~ 1½h Hiking time / year-round

Pathway to the Planets Ringgenberg-Goldswil

The Ringgenberg-Goldswil Pathway to the Planets demonstrates the dimensions of our solar system in an easily understandable way. The sun, planets and the vast distances between them are shown on a scale of 1:1 billion over a distance of twelve kilome-tres. In reality, one millimetre equals one thousand kilometres and normal walking speed equals approximately five times the speed of light!

The pathway also illustrates just how minuscule our solar system is in relation to the whole universe. Pluto, the outermost planet is approximately six kilometres from the centre. Proximal Centauri, the nearest fixed star, would have to be placed 40,000 kilometres away–almost exactly the circumference of the earth. The centre of the Milky Way would be on the moon and our neighbouring galaxy, Andromeda Nebula, would be placed far beyond our solar system.

A unique feature of the Ringgenberg-Goldswil model is that the planets have been depicted radiating in two directions from the centre, allowing various ways to explore our solar system. You can stroll from the centre to the east or west or take the opposite direction from the outer edge into the centre. In around five hours you can walk across the entire solar system, from the outermost planetary orbit on one side, through the centre to the outermost planetary orbit on the other side.

The starting point at the «Burgkirche» (church) Ringgenberg is easily reached by rail, bus or lake steamer with just a five-minute walk from the railway station or boat landing stage and a two-minute walk from the bus stop at the village post office.

Castle Path

The Burgenweg takes you back to the days of the Barons of Rothenfluh and Unspunnen. Haltenwald - various springs in the Haltewald forest (reservoir/purification plant) provide the Wilderswil municipality with its water. Rothenfluh Castle ruins - the remains of the former Rothenfluh Castle cling to a small band of rock. Little is known of the inhabitants from the 12th century. It is most likely that they left the cliff castle for a safer seat in Unspunnen Castle. Tschingelmatte - according to legend and folklore, the Baron of Rothenfluh was slain near here by his brother. Exiled and despondent, the homeless assassin ended his once mighty lineage in distant lands. Plattenweg -this footpath built by soldiers in 1944 leads up to the Unspunnen ruins and fine views of the Bödeli (flood plain) with the villages of Wilderswil, Bönigen, Matten and Interlaken. After the last Ice Age (about 10000 years ago), debris and boulders carried down by the waters of the Lütschine, Saxetenbach and Lombach split the so-called Lake Wendel into two, forming Lake Thun and Lake Brienz were formed. Unspunnen ruins - the local region was ruled from Unspunnen Castle by the Barons of Rothenfluh-Unspunnen (12th century), the Lords of Weissenburg (14th century) and Lords of Scharnachtal (15th century). After 1500 the castle was abandoned and fell into decay. It was finally used as a quarry.

Here too you have spectacular views over your immediate surroundings and the snow-capped summits of the Jungfrau massif. Gerbigässli - ‘Gerberei’ means tannery - and as the name says, hides were made into leather here in earlier times. ~ 1½h Hiking time / Spring till automn
